Description: In researching early American tatooed women, I came across a portrait of Jean Furella, a bearded lady of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in the early to mid 1900's. My woven piece depicts the evolution of her life as a circus attraction from bearded to tattooed lady. An abstracted and short portrayal of the evolution is shown through projected imagery of a beard and tattoos, but what drew me to this character was the underlying love story that was catalyst to Jean ridding of her beard.
